What is Discipleship?

The term discipleship can mean different things to different people. Before we talk about what it is, here’s what it’s not. It’s not a program. It’s not a curriculum-based process. It’s not a course with a workbook, or a class to check off as completed. Sure, this can help us learn, but it's so much more!

To understand discipleship, we look to Jesus. First, what is a disciple? A disciple is someone who has encountered Jesus, grows in their knowledge of Him, follows Him and experiences the love of their Heavenly Father. It is someone who lives out their daily life with a heart of obedience, not because they have to but in response to His love for them. A disciple lives their life on a mission for the glory of God, fueled by the power of the Holy Spirit. Discipleship, the journey of growing in our relationship with Him, is more than learning the teachings of Jesus but appropriating them here on earth as it is in heaven. Through the process of discipleship, we’re living a missional life rooted in love for one another, with the purpose of making Jesus known and bringing His Kingdom to life in our day-to-day. He modeled discipleship as a lifestyle. He lived the natural rhythms of life, the day-to-day routines, with twelve friends devoted to honoring God. When we read the New Testament, we see how relational Christianity is supposed to be.

Ultimately discipleship cultivates a deeper relationship with Jesus, revealing an even more incredible version of yourself, your purpose and destiny!

Become A Disciple Making Leader

Jesus intended for all his followers to spread His teachings throughout the world, not keep their faith to themselves. This is what’s known as “the great commission.” Jesus’ final command and the directive to all Christians. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

We are His disciples called to make disciples. As His image-bearers, co-laborers, Royal Priesthood, and ambassadors, our mission is to mirror the life of Jesus for the purpose of bringing it to life for others. Our life work includes proclaiming the good news of salvation, healing the sick, proclaiming freedom from sin, setting the captives free and making disciples who can do the same. This journey together helps us navigate life through the lens of Scripture. It produces a Biblical worldview that provides answers for every life experience. This is the challenge, the call, the command Jesus gave us. It's time to rise up and make disciples who can make disciples. Start your journey today!

At KWI we work with individuals, the local church and organizations who have a passion for the King, His Kingdom, and the command to make disciples. We would love to hear from you!
